About John Will:
John Will is an Australian martial-arts pioneer best known for bringing and building Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in Australia and the wider Australasian region. He’s widely regarded as one of the early non-Brazilian BJJ black belts (often associated with the “Dirty Dozen”), founded what became the largest BJJ organisation in Australasia, has written multiple instructional books and an autobiographical series, and has coached or influenced several notable MMA/BJJ athletes.
Beyond sport and competition, John has a long history of applying grappling and defensive tactics in real-world contexts, including law-enforcement and defence training. That practical orientation - teaching what works under pressure, not just what looks good in rehearsal - is a hallmark of his legacy and one reason he is respected across different communities within the combat arts.
John's contribution to BJJ in Australia has been recognised through senior rank promotions and widespread acknowledgement from the global BJJ community. As a pioneer, teacher of teachers, and prolific author, his influence is visible in clubs, curricula and the many instructors who trace part of their lineage and approach to his work. John Will received his BJJ black belt under Rigan Machado (and trained with Jean Jacques Machado), becoming one of the first non-Brazilian black belts - part of the group commonly called the “Dirty Dozen.” In 2025 John Will was publicly promoted to coral belt, as the first Australian to receive that rank.
